The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Arno Press (January, 1978)
Authors: United States, Leslie J. Perry, and Calvin D. Cowles
Average review score:

If you can find one BUY IT!!! NOW!!!
This is THE indespensible source for Civil War maps. It has hundreds of them, from both sides, good, bad, and sometimes appalling inaccurate, produced by the men who actually fought there. You get to see what the generals saw, and sometimes its pretty appalling. Take McClellan's first map of the Penninsula for example, or Bragg's map of Chickamauga. On the other hand, you get Jed Hotchkiss's masterpieces from the Shenandoah Valley and some of the great maps produced on the Union side. One thing you notice is that, except for Hotchkiss, the Union had a pretty clear superiority as far as topography was concerned. Aside form the obvious uses for the historian, the maps are often extremely beautiful and artistic, unlike modern maps. There are a few minor problems. The first is that it is out of print and fairly hard to find, and pretty expensive if you do manage to find it (I paid $60 for a copy that was a little banged up). The second is that some of the maps are blurred and/or hard to read, and often run right through the seam of the book. I have also had problems with pages falling out completely. Anyway, if the high cost and sheer massiveness of this thing doesn't dismay you, and if you find a copy, buy and enjoy this masterpiece for a long time.

fantastic
One had better know his roman numerals as index to the map chart are confusing!!!!!!!!!!

Paradise Below Zero: The Classic Guide to Winter Camping (Fesler-Lampert Minnesota Heritage Book Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Trd) (23 August, 2000)
Authors: Calvin Rutstrum and Leslie Kouba
Average review score:

Finding the Wonder in Winter
Winter offers a beauty that is at once spare but stunning. Often it's charm eludes us because we don't know where, or more frequently, how to look. Our excursions are usually too brief to grant the appreciation that comes from real familiarity. An afternoon skating or sledding, a day on the ski slopes may whet our appetite, but such relatively brief outings limit our appreciation of this environment. To be sure, it's not an environment that is terribly forgiving of ill preparation or ignorance. Calvin Rutstrum is a wonderful guide, not only offering his vast experience in practical matters, but enhancing our appreciation of the winter environment with his knowledge, his opinions (and has has definite opinions!) and his experiences. This should be in the library of every wilderness traveller who wishes to go on outings in the winter.

Needless to say, no single book is sufficient to turn a greenhorn into an experienced snow camper; but this is an excellent start. The language may at times reflect the times in which it was written, but Rutstrum offers solid experience; the stories alone are worth the read, even for those who don't anticipate ever sleeping in the wilderness in the snow. One caution; reading this book may prompt you to push beyond what you consider to be your comfort zone!

A wonderful book to read.
An interesting book to read even if you have no interest in winter camping or travel. Mr Rutstrum traveled most of his life in the Canadian wilderness on snowshoes or by dog sled. He tells many interesting stories about his dealings with the Cree, trappers, and hermits, I am assuming the time frame is the 40's through the 60's. I love to read how people used to live before the days of snowmobiles and plowed roads. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of adventure, it is a true classic.

Parents: Living with Teenagers / Teenagers: Living with Parents
Published in Paperback by E.L. Hudson Publishing (01 August, 2001)
Authors: Margaret Goldman and Leslie Ann Williams
Average review score:

Cuts To The Chase
Leslie Ann Williams' professional, straightforward, cut-the-crap honesty is balanced beautifully by her engaging wit and humor. It's just the right mix to encourage and nurture the necessary dialogue between the often warring factions of teenagers and their parents.

Williams' greatest strength may be in the seemingly effortless skill she exhibits in holding up the invaluable "mirror of recognition" for both parent and teenager as they assess the failure or success of particular strategies in their ongoing I'm-your-parent/I'm-no-longer-a-little-kid relationship.

Especially successful in guiding the reader to a humane and intelligent disarmament of the often volative parent/teenager disagreements, Williams supplies ample praise (and often gleeful conspiratorial advice) to both parents and their teens as they work to achieve a kind of detente in the arena dedicated to the art of parenting and growing up.

I can live with this book
I acquired this book recently on the recommendation of a friend. As both a parent and a public school teacher I thought it might prove interesting and useful, and indeed this is the case. The book is a quick read and to the point, making its case (so I would guess) in a fraction of the space other books on this topic take. Highly recommended for parents of teens and pre-teens, and for teens receptive to clear thinking in an informal and direct Q and A format.

Poopsie Pomerantz, Pick Up Your Feet

Authors: Patricia Reilly Giff and Leslie Morrill

EXCELLENT NEW EDITION TO THIS SERIES
Besides being well written, this is one book in this series by Patricia that has been greatly improved with the "new" covers. Why not make a good book better!? (I vote for that.) Another series, by Patricia, that has been improved, is her "Polk Street School" Series. The new covers are beautiful, and children can identify with the books, and lessons from them. So far, the "new and improver" covers are: 1. December Secrets 2. The Beast in Ms. Rooney's Room 3. Fish Face 4. The Candy Corn Contest 5. Dinosaur's Paw, The Valentine Star, & Snaggle Doodles Are Coming Soon. (They're worth waiting for!) Enjoy!

A great story!
This is an excellent book! I read it when I was 18. I have been a Casey Valentine & friends fan since I was 10 and had devoured all the other books and was thirsty for more, and had been writing to the author on and off when I was a kid and she mentioned this book in her letter to me and so years later I finally found it in the library. I loved it! It is so good! It's about a chubby girl named Poopsie who wants to change her image, and her friend Tracy (some friend!) always puts her down and calls her a "Lily Liver". She wants ballet lessons and she gets her wish when her mom takes a job waitressing but the catch is that Poopsie will be home alone in the evenings while her mom works and she put Poopsie in charge on her baby brother Teddy. Thing is, Poopsie is scared since Tracy told her that a kidnapper is in the neighborhood. Poopsie gets tired of Tracy always teasing her so when her ballet class does a musical, Poopsie lies to her about her role in it, and then Tracy becomes impressed and decides she's going to come watch her perform...Poopsie's got herself in a jam! It's a funny book that will make you laugh out loud!

Qualitative Reading Inventory

Simple, Fast, Accurate
I was trained to use the QRI in college and have found it invaluable when assessing how well my students can read. Even though I teach middle-school math, there are times when I suspect a child is struggling because they can't read their text or what I write on the board. The special ed department is busy and sometimes it's just easier to do a quick assessment yourself. That way, if you see a problem, you have some evidence when you seek help elsewhere.

This is quick and easy to implement. A great investment.

QRI II: Use in Diagnosing and Improving Reading Abilities
This collection of reading samples, and a detailed guide in using them in creating running records, grade-level assessments, as well as assisting the reading teacher in gaining a basic understanding of each student's comprehension strengths and weaknesses, is an essential addition to a serious reading teacher's library. Explanation and instruction in assessing your student's prediction, think-aloud, self-correction and basic comprehension abilities is thorough, easy to understand, and laid out in a manner that lends itself to frequent usage, both planned and spontaneous. The authors have chosen literature (both narrative and expository text as well as simple poetry) that is appealing to children, thus the stereotypical "stiff and cold" testing format of the past can be avoided as the teacher and student share a literary experience while a student's abilities are examined, and a plan of action for improvement is formulated. The cost of this book is minimal when one considers the amount of usage possible, and the innumerable reading problems that can be diagnosed and treated, by professionals who buy and use this valuable diagnostic and teaching tool.

What a wonderful book to read to a child before bedtime! It reminded me of laying in the grass looking up at the stars and dreaming about things afar. The Cree legend elopes with the pursuit of your dreams, as rabbit and crane take you there.

Report from Ground Zero
An outstanding book written by Dennis Smith.
It brings you back to the day and gives you chills.
This is a must have book. It honors those that lost their lives and brings you closer to them. God Bless America

Respectful, sad, insightful and loving
I commute into DC everyday and I like to spend my time listening to audios. I am one of those people that have not been able to hear or see anything about 9/11/01 that doesn't bring tears to my eyes or makes my heart ache. I work at a bookstore and happened to read the inside jacket of the hard-cover edition and I thought, "This sounds like something I can handle."
Dennis Smith, a retired FDNY firefighter, wrote the book with compassion, respect and love for not just the victims, but also their families, the rescue workers and for everyone who was affected in one way or another.
The audio contains personal accounts from people who were directly involved. Most of the stories are from firefighters and they are told so eloquently it's amazing. I believe there are approximately six different readers for the CD edition and the emotion they infuse into it is incredible. This story talks about the wonderful "brotherhood" amongst firefighters and the emotional and physical toll they went through as humans.
The stories made me grin in parts and made me cry in others. It helped me to begin to deal with my feelings about that day and gave me, I don't know if hope is the right word, but a warm fuzzy feeling.
I do believe that if you are personally familiar with the "brotherhood" of firefighters (my father is a volunteer firefighter in our community) this will strike a chord of understanding.
I just can't say enough good things about this. You won't be disappointed in this cd.
